I really like that. Mills River is not the prettiest place, but that's a nice house. I really haven't spent that much time looking west of the city either. The traffic going back to Asheville sucks from Mills River area, but that's the biggest drawback.
I'd rarely be going through there at rush hour, so maybe it won't be as big of an issue.
I like I the Mills River/Etowah area. It is convenient to Asheville, Brevard, and Hendersonville. I don’t go to Asheville usually during rush hour, but haven’t found traffic all that bad, relative to places like Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, etc.. Once they finish the interstate, traffic flow will be much better.
When I was searching for property, I was told that Mills River has issues with septic systems due to the soil. I just want to point this out if you do search there.
Another place you may look at is Marshall. It has a cute downtown. They have a Thursday night event with live music and also holiday events. It's near Weaverville and not far from Asheville.

My girlfriend has a Marshall address. Other than Ingles, there's basically nothing there. There's a few downtown places to grab a casual meal, and a couple of boutiques.
When I looked at <$250k in Marshall, and excluded land alone, there were three results. One is a $55k teardown. One is an old gas station that isn't even set up for residential living. The other is right at $250k, and doesn't look like it's been touched since the 1970s.
That's kind of the story of this whole property search. There isn't much selection anywhere outside of Asheville proper. What is available is often out of budget - if I can afford it, it's almost always going to be a huge project.
I do like western NC, but with having to only be within two hours, I have options. I also don't want to be in some tiny town with no gym, no Walmart, etc.
So this may be out of consideration because it is near Marshall, but it is on 9 acres of land, which made me think it could generate income to allow for improvements of the house. It sure needs a roof inspection and a flood analysis, but it might be a good stepping stone. https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...3_M68142-04156
This is cute as a button, in move in condition, in Nebo which is a safe community and should have great rental potential. Two miles to Lake James. A short drive to Morganton, Lenoir, Hickory. https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...1_M55099-82929
