We are considering moving to a close-in neighborhood to take advantage of Asheville's downtown amenities, but we are also very interested in greenways for running/walking/cycling. I know this is something the city is working on, and I found a web page that listed current and planned green space trails in the Asheville area, but it didn't say how long they are.

My husband runs 6-10 miles/day, preferably not on pavement. Currently, in the N Atlanta burbs, he drives about 10 minutes to do a loop in a park (which strikes us as kind of funny - but he doesn't want to get run over at 6:00 a.m.).

Does anyone know of neighborhoods close to (walking/running distance) these current or planned green trails and how long the trails add up to? Or of any other good, close-in places to trail run. I'm familiar with places like Pisgah, but am looking for something closer for a daily run.

My parents live in the area, so we are reasonably familiar with it. We are open to a wide range of housing and neighborhood styles, but we do have two elementary school children - so while funky or urban is fine, we don't want to be too pioneering. Housing costs, schools and job commute aren't a concern right now. We plan on searching several neighborhoods in more detail next time we visit.

I'd appreciate any knowledge shared.
