The widening project of US-321 between Lenoir and Blowing rock claimed it's first construction fatality today. I passed the accident on my way home this afternoon. If you pray, please pray for the family of the worker who was killed as well as for my friend Nancy, who works on the job site. Nancy is also a heavy equipment operator and is badly shaken by the death of her friend.
The 35 year old woman killed was dumping a load of dirt down the lower (south) side when the truck began to slide down the mountain backwards. She attempted to jump clear and the vehicle (a HUGE articulated off road dump truck) hit or rolled on her on it's way down a 200' ravine. Her name has not yet been released.
When I saw this on the news yesterday I wondered...would she have been able to survive if she had stayed in the truck? I know the idea of being in a vehicle going off the side of a mountain doesn't sound logical, but still, since she was killed by the truck itself I just wondered.
She didn't have her seat belt on and it's doubtful she would have survived rolling 200' down the mountain. :-(
