I think you should look at Rutherford county. Blueridge Mountains to the west, the South Mountain chain to the north, and rolling land to the east and south. All inside the county borders.

At 3,000 ft, Jefferson and West Jefferson are IN the mountains (Ashe County). But yes, Hickory, at an elevation of 1,140 ft would be considered foothills. Rutherfordton (as some have nodded as a potential candidate) even lower, at 912 ft.
True. It's just that Jefferson and West Jefferson never feel mountainous. When you drive that area it's easy driving. Also it is much cooler and nicer in the summer than the foothills.
Marion might also be worth a look if you're shopping the foothills - 30 miles or so on I-40 to Asheville, easy access to Hickory or Charlotte if you need to power shop, low real estate prices, decent amenities with a small-town feel. The altitude by Lake James is around 1,200' with good views of the mountains from many locations. Marion is relatively flat as it is just east of the Blue Ridge and Black Mountains.

Have you ever been to South Mountain State Park? Amazing. Lots of great hikes. From on of them...it's the trail that is fairly steep...there is a view of Charlotte and all of the water towers between SM and Charlotte. Pretty cool.

Everytime I drive through marion it seems rather depressing.
I agree. And a nice thing about Lake Lure is that it's in the foothills looking into the mountains. Moderate altitude, spectacular mountain views. Could satisfy you both.
