Here's a good site with pictures and descriptions of the falls along with access information:

North Carolina Waterfalls - Nature Photography - Image Licensing - Southern Appalachian Wildflowers - Brevard Transylvania County - Fall Color

For impressive waterfalls that are easy to access try Dupont State Forest:

DuPont State Forest

just be prepared for crowds at Dupont if you go on a weekend or holiday.

I can tell you about a super waterfall , easy to get to and easy for kids ~ it's in Pisgah Forest. You park right on the road, walk down some stairs and you're at the bottom of a big, beautiful waterfall.
Have fun and good luck on your search!

I agree with earthfaries .. if you have to kids with you this one may be your best bet. It's called "Looking Glass Falls" and is much more pedestrian friendly than some of the other more remote waterfalls. Plus you can swim at the bottom but, watch out, that water is cold *brrrrrr*

Looking Glass Falls is the easiest to get to, very pretty and yet, you just climb down a bunch of stairs to get to the bottom if you want to, or you can just admire it once you get out of your car and walk to the top of the stairs that lead down.

I don't know where you will be driving from. So here are some rough directions.

From Asheville, drive down to NC-280 also known as Airport Road. Drive about 16-17 miles till you get to the intersection of NC-280 and US-276. Bear right on US-276 and drive another 7-8 miles and you will see signs for Looking Glass Falls on the right. If you would like to view some pictures of this waterfall, check out some of the shots on Flickr. Goto Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing (http://www.flickr.com - broken link) and type in Looking Glass Falls and some pictures should pop up. With the recent rains we have received the water flow should be good.

PM me if you'd like more details.
