We're moving to Wichita this August. My wife will be in grad school. Looking for some information/recommendations on where to live and more precisely where NOT to live. Looking at the crime rates, they seem to be pretty high as compared w/ the national average.

Thanks for all the info, I hadn't gotten back to check in a while. Sounds like we'll have a fair amount to look at when we come back to visit. We're moving from Dallas near the end of the summer. We don't have kids, but do have dogs, so I'm sure that will affect where we end up.

Moving back to wichita
Hey,
I'm moving to Wichita too, this is my home, whereas I am not real excited about the city, I am excited to be coming home for grad school. I hope to be in a house and situated by June. Have a total of five kids that will be in elementary as well. Coming home from Florida. Missed the down to earth reality check Wichita and the midwest can provide. The people out here seem to be in a perpetual LALA land
And I'm so sick of the allergy issue out here. I spend a fortune on meds. Never had health issues back home. But it will be weird not having the ocean to go to whenever I feel like it. We currently live 10 min away. Awww!!!

Living is cheap here
I'm originally from NY (talk about allergy issues!!), so everything seems sooo much cheaper here. You can find a lot of nice places to rent (and buy) in the outskirts of Wichita. Andover, Rosehill, Augusta. All good schools too. Lots of land, nice housing going up. They kill you in personal propery taxes on vehicles oout here though.

I am going to be moving away from Wichita as soon as my schooling is over with in 07. Wichita is 10 years behind the rest of the US. Can't wait to get out of KS.

Consider the West side too!
I moved to the Wichita area 5 years ago from Southern California and love it!! The East side of Wichita is great indeed, but so are many parts of the ever growing "west-side". Make sure to consider areas like Maize, Goddard, Cheny, Garden Plain, etc. We just love it out here- a mix of rural/open spaces/ and the benefits of city life! My asthmatic son is down to just 2 daily medications (from 7) and that is great! The beach is nice, but the quality of life here outweighs the occasional trips to enjoy the surf!

Eastern Wichita, in my opinion, is the best place to live. They have good resaurants, great entertainment, & nice houses. The west side is also pretty nice. I hope you guys find a great house!

And I'm so sick of the allergy issue out here. I spend a fortune on meds. Never had health issues back home. But it will be weird not having the ocean to go to whenever I feel like it. We currently live 10 min away. Awww!!!
