Hey everyone,

I'm an artist from Wichita, unemployed but making the shift from "practical" work to oil painting. I've been working on a few subjects here, like the buildings in Cowtown, cityscapes in downtown Wichita, etc.

I'm very curious about local scenery that a person who has no car but has some hiking/camping gear could get out and paint, like a week or two at a stretch. I'm thinking of heading out towards the Gypsum Hills. I'd really love to paint the contrast of the greenery against that red clay of the hills.

Does the Cimarron National Grassland include the actual Gypsum Hills, where a person can primitive-camp, or are the hills on private property?
I hope this isn't a strange question. I know the main reason people head out that way is to fish at the lake near Medicine Lodge or to see the historical sights, but not sure if anyone goes out to stay in the hills further west instead.

Thanks!

Those hills are absolutely beautiful. I have a pretty good feeling much of the land is private, unfortunately. You might try calling the Medicine Lodge Chamber of Commerce. I'm sure they'd be able to give you a more exact answer.
