Interesting - Boeing was awarded by the DoD to build the next generation tanker, the KC-46A, which is a 767.

Did I miss something because today in Obama's speech I heard this: "Here at Boeing, business is booming. Last year, orders for commercial aircraft rose by more than 50 percent. To meet that demand, you hired 13,000 workers all across America – including 5,000 here in Everett. Now the biggest challenge is how to turn out planes fast enough. That's what you call a high-class problem.

This company is a great example of what American manufacturing can do. And the impact of your success goes far beyond the walls of this plant. Every Dreamliner that rolls off the assembly line here in Everett supports thousands of jobs in different industries all across the country. Parts of the fuselage are manufactured in South Carolina and Kansas. The wing edges come from Oklahoma. The engines are assembled in Ohio. The tail fin comes from right down the road in Frederickson. And people in every one of these communities – some of whom are here today – are benefitting from the work that you do."

I think he got mixed up thinking his mother was from a foreign country instead of his father, Kansas, because that is where some of those added jobs in other places came from I do believe but I guess to him it is "overseas". Good grief, where did this man study geography!

Spirit Aerosystems makes part of the 787 airframe here. Mostly just the forward fuselage. Figure below seems to show wing leading edges and engine pylons as well.

Boeing sold its commercial aircraft division in Wichita, and the 2000+ employees being laid off worked for the military.

Boeing to close historic Wichita factory

It's not really affecting us in Wichita. I work for a company manufacturing aircraft cabinetry and we've had OT every month that I've worked there. Technically the last Boeing people that were here are engineers and they were planning to transfer them to other places anyway and people have adapted to a town without Boeing.

Update: the aircraft cabinetry company was bought out by a competitor whose sole focus was aircraft furniture. They eventually started moving their employees and replacing the people who were working at the company and I left. All of sudden they closed down the facility last I heard which is astonishing considering they had just installed a massive $20 million dollar custom made dust collection system to replace the old one that wasn't working half the time or the old one was just too small to be able to deal with the sheer amount of dust collected every day. They laid everyone off. I have no idea what they did with their employees that they moved in to replace us. They merged what they bought from the company into their company and now they offer both aircraft cabinetry and furniture.

I left and eventually got a bachelor's degree in Communications from WSU and couldn't find a job even after filling out over 200 applications (that's after I left the company and went to work for other small retail companies while I went to school) so I'm currently working as a custodian at a local high school. I hear Spirit Aerosystems is now hiring massively due to the fact that 40% of their employees are retiring within the next 5 years and they need replacements. I'm going to be applying and going back to school to get my 3rd certificate for training purposes.
