Can anyone explain to me why Wichita decided to build their major North/South freeway next to an open sewage canal? I didn't live in the area that long ago, but wonder why everytime I almost gag while driving on I-135.

I think you're confused. It's a flood control canal. However there is a waste water treatment plant in south Wichita and a meat packing plant or something in north Wichita, not all that far from the canal route I think. I drive the canal route every day and rarely notice anything but every great once in awhile you can catch a whiff if the wind is blowing the right way.

Yeah the waste water treatment plant on the south side is aweful. I was riding in through there with a friend of mine and we both looked suspiciously at each other and then realized...'oh yeah....sewage treatment plant...'

I think you may have become too acclimated to the stench to notice it. You are correct, it does seem to be worse on the south side. IMO, the smell is so bad that it takes real effort not to vomit everytime I drive through that area. I have lived in a lot of places and never smelled something like that in a modern US city. Why is it so bad in Wichita compared to other places that also have waste water plants? Is there something wrong with the system in Wichita?

Doesn't always smell bad every day which is why we don't notice it. With that being said, I moved up away from Wichita.
