Wichita metro area has a large out-migration of people to other areas, especially earlier this decade. That is the main reason why the population growth numbers are low in percentage terms, even though the Wichita metro area has a very high birth rate compared to most areas of the US. Job growth numbers are below average, median household incomes lag the national average by a decent margin, and a brain drain of talent is evident. The only area of Kansas that is doing relatively well is Johnson County, and that is only 1 county out of 105. Brownback ran the state right into the ditch and it will take many years for the state to recover from the widespread cuts due to tax cuts for the wealthy that resulted in sizable revenue shortfalls into the general fund.

We drove through a large part of KS including Wichita two weeks ago. Wichita is a construction zone. So what every metro is. No trash on the highways, clean truck stops. People actually respond when you start a conversation with a stranger. SO may have some options in the area.

No huge crowds
Fresh air
Quiet
Friendly people
Open space as far as the eye can see
You actually know your neighbors
Affordable housing

I am 63 years old, hate sports, no longer go to concerts, and am retired. If I need to travel to another small town for something we don't have here, it still takes less time than going for the same thing in the city. I would much rather see cattle, cornfields and an open sky than strip malls, apartment complexes and skyscrapers.
I love sports and I am not retired yet. Other than that I would agree with everything that you have written. We live in the city of Wichita and think it is great. Fortunately for us we are still on the edge for now and can see open land used for farming and ranching. Kansas may not be for everyone, but you must embrace what makes Kansas great.

I lived in Wichita back in the 1980's. People were very friendly and no matter who you were it was common to have friends from all over the social map. When I moved to Missouri (biggest mistake I ever made) yuppies didn't associate with cowboys and they didn't associate with skateboarders who didn't associate with...............

Wichita is still friendly. We live on the Northwest side of town and love it. Please come visit Wichita and you might decide to stay.

I sure hope the OP didn't spend the last six years in Wichita waiting for you to come along and finally make this life-changing suggestion.

RE; Wichita. The number of insecure, dumb, peacocking truck and motorcyle riders with absurdly loud exhausts and engines is increasing in this increasingly intolerable town of idiocracy come alive. If you are a loud motorcylist or truck driver you are ruining society because of your insecure and stupid attempts to draw attentionn to yourself like a dumb child. It is impossible to have a moments silence anywhere which is ironic for a midwestern city designed to be an inefficient expanse of cheap and fake homes surrounded by grass.
