Does anyone know why this is nearly impossible?

My spouse and I recently returned from a vacation and arrived around 9pm on a Saturday. We went directly to the designated taxi stand to catch a taxi home, but there was none in sight. After waiting several minutes, my spouse went back into the airport to look for a list of taxi companies to call, and there was nothing to be found, only hotel shuttles.

Finally I googled taxi service in Wichita and there were very few results. I called the first number and was told they were not allowed to pick up anyone at the airport, that I must call another company. What? I asked why and was told there was something to do with a city ordinance or something like that. I couldn't believe it. I called the next taxi service in the list and finally, about 9:40, we were on our way home.

I just can't comprehend why I can't leave my car at home during a lengthy trip and expect to take a taxi home upon return. Getting to the airport from my home by taxi was not a problem. Also, someone visiting Wichita for the first time must be perplexed when there are no taxis and no signs with phone numbers to call, especially for companies that will actually pick them up.

You should try Uber. I've flown out of Wichita a few times and I don't recall any taxis either.

Is Uber taking the place of taxis? The idea of getting into just anyone's car makes me nervous, but maybe I need to investigate. I'm more accustomed to taxis, and I don't recall there not being any at the airport about this time last year.

Do realize it's NORMAL for the Wichita taxis to take 90 minutes to arrive after you call...some people have been know to be forced to wait 4 hours for a cab for some unknown reason. Only allowed to hail a cab at airport and the bar district in old town. Are some airport shuttles serving Wichita area, might check into this for next time but not sure it will work so well leaving the airport for home in Wichita.

Uber and Lyft seem to have cannibalized the taxi industry's business in Wichita, but with good cause... Their service at the airport has been terrible since I've been here the past few years and there are normally Ubers or Lyfts available in a reasonable amount of time. I don't understand how the taxi service is so poor here but I've had very good experiences with the Uber drivers here overall.

Some years ago i would have to call ahead (after landing) and reserve a taxi whenever i flown into Wichita.
They would wait for me at the terminal baggage claim area that I specified.
Today, forget taxis - I Uber now (much easier and effective than taxis).

Forget Uber! They suck big time!
It's Lyft for me now.
