I am just wondering what the hispanic population is like in the Williston area? I am moving there sometime this spring and just wondering what I can expect. There is a town close to me right now that has a meat packing plant and a very large population and has brought a lot of trouble with it. Hoping I can get away from all of it so I am just wondering. Thank you
I can't answer your question. But you can't really assume that if there is a significant Hispanic population, there is automatically going to be 'trouble.' In my area, there are lots of Hispanics (probably 10% or more)--not only from Mexico, but from Peru, Chile, Argentina, Colombia (really all over Latin America), even Spain... yet the crime rates are below the national average around here. I actually work with a number of latinos/latinas at both of my jobs. No trouble. In fact, I appreciate the opportunity to practice my Spanish (yes, they speak English as well). Now if they could just hire some Norwegians... jeg vil gjerne praktisere norsk! Or an attractive (single, of course) French woman around 40 years old... Bonjour mademoiselle, comment allez-vous?
tracymn... the hispanic population is very low in Williston. According to the 2009 census...the hispanic population did increase 84%...from around 185 to 343. I believe the population will increase as more people move in.
Seriously though...I have to agree that a Hispanic population should not even be an issue. There are some very nice people up there. I really enjoy the new restaraunt Don Pedro's Family Mexican...very good and authentic!! very nice family.
Many would be surprised that the Williston-Sidney area (also known as the Mon-Dak) to the locals... has had a large Hispanic migrant worker population for decades. Many migrant families make the Yellowstone Valley between Williston-Sidnay, their summer home. They help maintain and then harvest the sugar beets. The Bufurd bottoms area in ND all the way over to Fairview and Sidney, irrigate and produce large amounts of sugar beets...and processed at a large Sugar plant over the boarder in Sidney, MT.

That may be coming to an end.
RoundUp Ready sugar beets is eliminating the need for many migrant workers.
There was a documentary on tv about the migrants who had been coming to Minnesota for years to work the sugar beet fields.
Some said they will not return and the reason is RoundUp Ready sugar beets no longer needs them to weed the fields.
