Im coming to North Dakota this weekend. I don't have my own vehicle.I'm in my 20's. Good driving record, I have my DOT medical card and flagger certification. I have funds to last 3-4 weeks. My question is, will it be possible to find a job without a car? What would be the best town to go, Williston, Minot, Dickinson, or some other town.
My take is that it would be possible to survive in Williston with no wheels. As long as you live and work within the "old" city with sidewalks and residential streets, it's not that far to walk across unless you are out of shape.
"Surive" is the operable term. You could work and earn a high enough wage to pay for a flat, but only if you remove the expenses associated with a vehicle.
Much of the jobs that people move across the country for are based outside of the old town where walking would be impossible.
My idea of an easy walk is 3-4 miles one-way on the residential streets.
My idea of a hard walk is 1/4-mile either N or S of, say, Wal-Mart. ... some stuff is NOT pedestrian-friendly.
OTOH, Minot and Bismark actually have a bus system ( kinda-sorta ).
It's going to be real tough without a vehicle. Doable but it makes looking for work that much harder. There's someone on here who very recently came up here from Miami, FL without a vehicle &, IIRC, he got a job in construction at ~$14/hr but housing was included. Housing is key. Whatever form it might take. Especially without a vehicle. There was a recent CL ad in this area posting exactly that & I applied via email (no other choice) but got no response. Probably inundated with apps! CL is a good site to check for jobs that might not appear on NDJS's site, etc. What I do is:
Select "north dakota"
Select "all jobs"
Type in "williston" (or whatever ...)
I get the impression that the CL job postings get filled fast! At least some of them. Example of some that don't: There's all sorts of work for CDL A drivers. Generally require a minimum of experience but there are a few that don't.
You hafta have a vehicle IMO.
Think about it...where are you going to go when you jump off the train or bus??
You'll just find yerself standing in the station with yer bags and no way to get around.
A possible would-be perspective employer isn't going to ferry you around town.
How are you going to get to job interviews?? grocery stores?? libraries??, etc.
Like the man said, most of the jobs people come to town for are based miles away
from Main St in some very remote locations -- a long walk if you ask me.
And I wouldn't rely on hitchhiking around Williston.
Ideally, you should have an extended camper van to drive up with (G20 or Ram350)
You don't need a big RV.
A large van with a small sink, a small fridge, maybe a hotplate, and a bed in the back to crash in.
That would serve as fairly compfortable housing and transportation while you look around the area.
When you land a paying job yer boss might even let you plug it into the side the building.
The only expenses you'd have would be gas, food, and beer.
Failing that I would at least save up some $$ to buy a clunker when you arrive.
You'll definitely need it.

Thanks for any help, really appreciate it!
The one thing you DO have going for you is your age (in yer 20's).
But without a vehicle that's about it.
I know one guy in his early 50's with many years of safe experience as a CDL driver.
But most outfits won't even give his app a second glance cause they want a young buck like you.
That said you may just hit 777's if you keep at it.
