Hello! My boyfriend and I are both originally from Connecticut, currently living in Georgia, and seriously considering a move to the Appleton area. We've read through a few threads so far that deal with Appleton and have tried to research what we can, but a few things are coming to mind that we're still curious about.

1. We know we're going to be expecting harsh winters, but what about summers? How much pollen is there, for example?

2. We currently use Bank of America but see that there are literally zero in Wisconsin as a whole. What are some of the more popular, prominent banks in the area?

3. Coming to a place like Georgia from a place like Connecticut was a bit of a culture shock. Would you consider Wisconsin/Appleton more "red" or "blue" as a whole? I hear there are "rednecks" but I am curious as to whether they are the same kind of racist, ignorant and uneducated types as we found down south. On that note, is there any particular kind of accent?

4. What are some things to do? We've already looked up roller skating, ice skating, movie theaters, restaurants, and the mall. Is there anything special to the area that would be fun to do on weekends or time off?

5. How are jobs looking at this point in time? I mainly work in customer service and clerical positions, whereas my boyfriend has security experience but it currently working for the post office.

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can provide!

I am actually a transplant from Green Bay, Wi to South Georgia...but I visit Green Bay/Appleton area yearly. I love Appleton. It has a great upscale feel to it and the mall/restaurants are upper tier compared to Green Bay. Plus the upside of living near Green Bay gives you access to Packer games, concerts, the Oneida Casino, and the Bay for water recreation in the summer. You are not far from Door County either, which is just a delightful area to visit. You need to google that area. It has been called the Cape Cod of the midwest. You are also not far from Milwaukee, Madison, or the Wisconsin Dells. If you do not have jobs yet consider either area, b/c they are so close to each other. As for the rest of your post, I will try to answer some questions
Summers are great. A few weeks (like 1-2) of hot humid weather but nothing like it is down here. People appreciate anything over 65 degrees and you will notice lots of exercisers outside or people washing their cars. Storms are common, but anything severe you could just trot down to the basement for protection...generally pretty safe. the pollen there is not even close the horror of Georgia, but it depends on your specific allergies.
refer to above for stuff to do. whenever we go home to visit, we never run out of things to do, and we usually have to cross a few things off of our list due to time. In the dead of winter though, things do slow down no doubt. I used to deal blackjack at the Casino and winter was definitely busier.
jobs: times are tough all over, but there is a lot of business in the area. I know there are a lot of Insurance companies that always seem to be hiring. the casino paid security officers well (back in the 90s). I wish I could help you more in that area.

Feel free to fire any other questions.

I grew up in the Fox Valley (Fond du Lac/Oshkosh/Appleton area). Alpharetta (Atlanta suburb) reminds me very much of Appleton.
