Hello,

In need of relocation help. I work for the federal government and will be relocating to WI from OR. I intend to commute to the Rhinelander area. I currently commute to my job some 75 miles away (so the distance doesn't bother me) - hence, the desire to live somewhere urbanesque.

Wondering what type of relatively young professional neighborhoods are available in Wausau (or surrounding area)? Are there residences in the River District of Wausau?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not to dissuade your living in Wausau, but driving in a snow storm from Rhinelander to Wausau or vice versa is not a fun drive at all and will be white knuckle driving all the way. Good luck with the move.

I agree with hankejp. The commute would not be good due to weather. Wausau is wonderful and reminds me a lot of where I grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, but I suggest you look closer to Rhinelander. But otherwise, Wausau has some newer condos near downtown that may suit your needs.

I lived in Tomahawk, WI, which is North of Wausau and about 20 miles from Rhinelander. The drive is treacherous in the winter, it would be a stressful commute as someone mentioned. Wausau is a larger city, but it is not "young professional" by any means. Northern WI is an area that is losing population, it is blue collar in general and the population is aging rapidly. There are some people who move into the area, but many of them are outdoor enthusiasts who choose to live outside of town on one of the many lakes or in a large wooded lot. It really is a haven for those who love hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, etc, and not much else.

There really is not "city life" to speak of in that area. If that really is important to you, I would suggest re-considering the move altogether.

The most fun I had living in the "Northwoods" was visiting Minoqua in the summer. It is a vacation hub and there is an active nightlife there in the summer with all the people coming North to vacation on the lakes. They have a neat little downtown area with some fun bars. But, it is only busy three months a year.

Good luck to you. It is a nice place to live if you appreciate the great outdoors, or if you are raising a family.

About the only time you see a critical mass of "young professionals" in that area is during holiday weekends (particularly Memorial Day, 4th of July weekend, and Labor Day) when much of Wisconsin gets overrun by vacationers from Chicago and Milwaukee. During the other 350-some days of the year... it's pretty much rural "Heartland America."

I have been driving to work from Rhinelander to Tomahawk every day for 3 years. There is only 1 day I was unable to make it there due to poor road conditions. The major highways are usually cleared up for the most part. Maybe somewhere in Tomahawk or Merrill would work for you?

It is ironic that I am moving from WI to the OR/WA area...
No offense: just not sure why you'd want to leave such a beautiful place!!
Anyway- best of luck with your move!!!

Well, moving to WI is definitely not my first choice (I would much rather be in the deep south - where I am originally from); however, it is the norm for the agency I work. I didn't want to move to OR, either! The state is absolutely beautiful; however, the taxes are astronomical and the people self-righteous (especially for what I do).

Winter driving in relatively flat land like WI is no where near the drive I currently make over two 4300+ foot passes. It is treacherous at times ... my southern boy nerves have been fortified.

Thanks for the responses ...
