I would stay away from Appleton and Wausau completely. Madison would be your best bet, or choose another State entirely. This is not the friendliest place to outsiders and/or minorities.

We live close to Wausau. There are more minorities here then we moved here 20 years ago. In some respects things are better but I know there will always be suspicions of minorities. We aren't a minority but we are from Chicago so we would be considered outsiders. But we have never had problems with being accepted.

Depends - what are you into? If you can fit into the bars/outdoors sort of local culture, it likely doesn't matter that much what race you are. But Wausau is unlike some other small Wisconsin cities (Stevens Point, Oshkosh, Eau Claire, La Crosse) in that there isn't a college or college culture to balance it out a bit better in terms of diversity (of thought and background).

Yes, and that's important. I grew up in Point, and I can tell you firsthand that there are some pretty primitive rednecks loose in rural Wisconsin. Nice thing about Stevens Point is that the college culture balances that out to a significant degree, but Wausau doesn't have that student population.

What kind of shape are you in? Because if you're really super-athletic with about 4% body fat, you should move to Green Bay. Everyone will think you're a Packer, and all you have to do is smile and keep your mouth shut. Get the best tables at restaurants, and never pay for a drink again!

^ When I lived in Point many years ago, a buddy was able to pull that off locally while the Jacksonville Jaguars were practicing there in the summer (during the "cheese league" years). Several ladies were not too happy when the Jaguars left town and he was still hanging out in the bars!
