I've been doing alot of rural driving since moving to a country house a few months ago and it made me wonder...what are the most rural spots in WI? by this I mean, small towns/villages that are the farthest away from major WI cities...the farthest I can find with google maps is a few that are about a 34-40 minute drive to the nearest good-sized city...anybody have more rural?

Depends on what you call a good sized city. Our property in Imalone-Rusk County is 10 or so miles from Bruce, pop around 700. 12 or so miles to Ladysmith, pop a few thousand. 35 miles to Rice Lake, bigger, but a town, not a city. Eau Claire is more than an hour away.

Washington Island! A 30 minute ferry ride to Northport and then about 50 miles down the Door Peninsula to Sturgeon Bay.

In terms of population density, Iron County and Florence County are the most rural.

Price is about 10 people per square mile. Iron and Florence county have between 7-9 people per square mile. So, you were very close

washington island may be an island, but it's hardly rural, but rather a well known tourist destination. Probably have to go to the north woods for low population density. Actually, compared to much of the country, eastern WI has a fairly high population density, though it was never high enough to actually bother me. Comfortably high would be more like it. For all the people who lived along lake michigan, it was amazing how few people utilized it at any given time. Always open area to relax in with nobody around if you walk a mile or so.

Crawford, Vernon, and Richland counties...Adams as well....Richland Center is pretty much the only largely populated area, and thats only 5000 people maybe....its spread out nicely though...same to Adams, besides Adams-Friendship...there aint another place like it in the entire county, lots of country. You'll run into an occasional county garage, or fire station, but dont be fooled, very very vacant. Crawford and Vernon are great if you want to witness some of the most rustic neat little places in the state, plus arguably the best landscapes Wisconsin has to offer.
