Hello people,

I am a resident from Texas, moving to Wisconsin since got job over there. I want to buy a car from my friend who stays in Michigan. My question is what procedures I have to do in order to bring the car from Michigan to Wisconsin and get it registered?

We bought a 4Runner from a private seller in Mnpls once. I filled out the registration on-line, printed it out and sent it to the DMV along with the title, like their website said. They LOST it!!! Can you imagine??? We were EXTREMELY lucky the seller was a nice guy. He had to go to the MN DMV, get a copy of the title, and mail it to us. He could very easily have ignored my emails and calls. What could we have done about it? He could have claimed we stole it even.

Just get the previous owner to sign off on the title (no notary required), get proof of insurance, go to the Secretary of State's office in Michigan and get a 30-day temporary tag (maybe 5 or 10 bucks), and enjoy your drive to Wisconsin. Everything else (title transfer, taxes, license, etc.) will be done in Wisconsin.
