Where are you coming from? It will help to frame the discussion?

If you are coming from NYC, it will be unbeleivably cheap. If coming from rural Mississippi, not so cheap.

My generall opinion is that 60K will allow for some fun money after taxes, expenses and 401K funding are covered.

401(k) is the section of the federal tax code that allows you to put money away for retirement on a tax-deferred basis. It has become the primary way by which Americans fund their retirement.

At 60K after federal, state, and local taxes you'll be taking home something on the order of 45K-50K a year. But then keep in mind another 5-7% of that will go toward sales tax when you buy stuff and toward property taxes if you buy a house or condo.

I hope you're ready for some drastic climate differences. Wisconsin gets damn cold in the winter. It's supposed to get down to -10c in Appleton next week and it's not even officially winter yet.

Thanks Drover. Yeah I heard that about the temperatures! But sure you'll get used to it.

Also, would anyone know what the price of car fuel is?
Any other advice or comments would be very much appreciated?

Appleton has some nice areas. You would be very close to Green Bay if you wanted to catch a Packer game. Areas surrounding Appleton can also be very nice- Neenah, Kimberly, Menasha, Little Chute are just a few cities. I lived in that area my whole life (Neenah WI) until we moved to MI. Gas is about $3.60 (goes up and down) a gallon. Lots of bars (College Ave is the street with a ton of bars in Appleton). 60K is great in my opinion-- especially if you are a single person! Best of luck to you!

Depends on what fuel you use. Right now petrol in the Appleton area is about 85 cents per liter; that goes for USD and AUD since they're worth about the same right now (thanks Federal Reserve ). That said, petrol prices have been quite volatile over the last few years. Six months from now it could be 25 cents a liter higher or 25 cents a liter lower.

Diesel-powered cars are very rare here, so unless you intend to buy a medium-duty truck diesel prices are kind of irrelevant.

Yeah that really cheap compared to here. Its over $2 a litre.
If I move to America I want a **** cool American car! because its way too expensive to drive big engine cars in Ireland.

Thanks too Jenny. Kind of what I want to hear!

Oh wait, why did I think you were Australian?

So yeah... petrol is more like €.65 or £.55 (not sure which part of Ireland you're from) per liter in Appleton.

go for it. Rent is cheap and Appleton is good safe area. Lake Michegan only 40 or so away and a good mall. Downtown isn't bad either except there are a few too many bars.
