Because of a job change we are considering a move to La Crosse. Our 4 year old daughter has high functioning autism. Any resources that anyone can recommend? Which schools have good Early Childhood? Any preschools anyone would recommend? Any other recommended services or contacts?

Hi, I used to work for an autism therpay provider called Beyond Boundaries of Autism, which is a non-profit org specializing in one-on-one, in the home or daycare therapy. Though I myself am from the Wausau area (central WI), BBA operates statewide and I'm sure you can get in touch with them. I worked with one high-functioning 5 year-old boy who after 6 months of our therapy, no longer needed it, and was cleared of LD status. Of course every child with autism is different, but there are good options. I know there are at least a couple other orgs which do the same kind of therapy, but their names escape me at the moment. As for schools, I don't know anything because I'm not from La Crosse, although I've been there and it's a great community, and very pretty in the summer.

I work at Chileda Institute, which is a residential and educational facility in La Crosse Wisconsin for individuals with Autism and other cognitive disabilities. We do provide services for year round day school. There are some great schools in the area that focus on mainstreaming, but not a lot of opportunity for year round school services. our website is Chileda Institute, Inc.

I can only repeat what has been said, LaCrosse still has great public schools but with the state cuts in education I'm not sure how long they will stay good. Chileda seems to be a top notch place for you to check out.
