Yeah, do us a favor and stay where you are. Believe it or not, grocery stores actually still take cash that you earned for food. Try that out first and then think about moving.
I feel like such a sucker for using after-tax income to pay for my groceries, while I'm also paying for other people's hot dogs, chips, soda, etc.

It sounds like the OP is in a tough spot. I understand people don't want to be sympathetic to someone asking about food stamps, but a lot of the posts in this thread come off as knee jerk self-indulgent judgmentalism.

i'll readily admit that as a kid in the 60's/70's in Milwaukee i had the misfortune to be raised in a household that was on welfare and used food stamps so can understand that side of the coin. And i can understand nowadays when something happens and hits a person/family hard and they may need a helping hand. There is no shame in that.
BUT, and i mean this with no disrespect, my issue would be with anyone planning to use food stamps even before a move takes place. I see the friend is going above and beyond with the help they are giving, but i'd be pushing to even take a lower paying job to get something going... which in turn allows you to help with the food... before hoping aid is available when one crosses the border. This may be only my opinion, but dont spend the time trying to get aid, spend the time trying to get that employment. And even if it's part time, it's something.

And yes a thread with a topic like this, even if it is a legit plea for advice and help, is going to get one flamed a bit. That's the way it can work with boards based on opinions.

I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for food stamps before I move, or if I have to wait until after the move to do it. Current plans are for me to move 4th of July week. I'll be leaving either the Friday or Saturday after the 4th, so I don't know if having a set moving day makes any difference.

My advise to you would be not asking for this kind of advise on this forum, but do your own search on the internet ( after all Walker's crowd is still celebrating their victory around here, just in case you didn't notice.)
Remember one thing; Wisconsin is one of the most vicious states when it's coming to welfare ( particularly when you are a single male.) Don't forget that it was the first state to abolish welfare as it's been known in this country and in the process it didn't stop at anything, placing children whose parents couldn't find jobs in time in the foster care.
When Obama came to power, that changed a bit, and apparently the food stamp program became more readily available, but with someone like Walker in the office that might change soon as well.
Remember yet another thing; from the point of view of those who are better off, no matter what your circumstances are, it's ALL YOUR FAULT and your fault only, however their accomplishments ( and status) are solely their OWN, and have nothing to do with grace of God so to speak)))
So take help from your friend ( you'll find this kind of people in Wisconsin too, more likely than in any other part of the country) and do your own search. When relying on strangers for help, you'll never know what kind of person you'll come across, because at this point Wisconsin is deeply divided.

That's true, but the OP should get off of his/her can, and do a little legwork.

People hit tough spots, and I'm sure nobody would want to be in one any more than the next guy. The issue is that the OP came here instead of just going to the state's website and finding out the answer (which is very quick and easy to do). The OP could have possibly applied at the same time. That's the issue. Coming here makes me think that the OP is looking for some workaround to the system, not the official answer.

There is no excuse for that, and nobody owes the OP any more than to point them in the direction of the place where the official answer resides.

There are jobs out there, as another poster mentioned even a low paying job is better than nothing! I'm sure you could find something. Try sites like Wisconsin Job Net map search, or indeed dot com or craigslist. There are plenty of resources, just don't succumb to using foodshare until you really have to.

Good Luck

Consider the OP was fired from their previous job and admits absolutely no fault of his own. Sounds like someone who doesn't take responsibility for their own behavior.....which sounds like 100% of the people who abuse the welfare system. "Wisconsin is Open for Business", not being "given the business" by people who feel that foodshare is a first and only option to making their life easier. Wisconsin was once the Meca of people seeking welfare, but the tide has shifted dramatically since November and we fully expect to implement a hardline model to correct the shortcomimgs of our welfare system. This will be our future moving forward.

say no to the food stamps... is there a food pantry thing in appleton? you should look that up. Also apply everywhere in person and try to talk to the manager. Doesn't matter where Mcdonalds,Burger King,PicknSlave, anywhere! also try to appear as nonghetto as possible, we don't like people who appear ghetto.

This is a pretty bold statement to make, especially when it's not true, without any "proof".

"Proof" as in what? As in "I personally don't know anyone who was forced to place children in foster care because of welfare reforms?"
This kind of proof?
Because if not, you could find this on-line for example in few minutes -

"While it is too early to measure definitively, there are some unsettling early signs. In Wisconsin — which embarked on welfare reform early and avidly — 5 percent of former welfare recipients, or one in 20, reported being forced to abandon their children. In San Diego County, foster care placements doubled after the new welfare law took effect. When researchers interviewed San Diego families who had become homeless after losing their benefits, 18 percent said their children subsequently went into foster care.
Nationwide, the number of children in foster care is rising, even in a period of overall economic prosperity — to 520,000 at last count, 20,000 more than a year before."

Is welfare reform sending more kids to foster care? - Newt Gingrich - Salon.com

This is just a glimpse in welfare reforms in Wisconsin, (that was a pioneer state in these reforms ( they took place what? around 1996-1997?)), in one county. Few years ago there was much more detailed information on it, and I don't mean on sites that were trumpeting "success," but sites with research that was showing what was really behind this *success.*
