Hopefully this kind of question is OK here, since it has to do with the state. Early next month I'll be moving to Wisconsin to live with a friend of mine, and I'm thinking of applying for food stamps until I find a job out there, so I can help out with SOMETHING even if I'm not employed. I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for food stamps before I move, or if I have to wait until after the move to do it. Current plans are for me to move 4th of July week. I'll be leaving either the Friday or Saturday after the 4th, so I don't know if having a set moving day makes any difference.

Hmm - you are gonna get killed on this site, but --- you kinda asked for it.

Just curious though - Why should WI taxpayers subsidize your move to WI?

I'm sorry but moving here and expecting to get food stamps right away seems ridiculous to me. Why not do the responsible thing and have a job before moving? This state makes it way to easy for people to get foodstamps, the Foodshare program is abused. I would get a job and forget about applying for food stamps. Nothing personal but it irks me that people actually try this.

Then what do you suggest I do to help out my friend while I search for a job? He's doing me a huge favor, I want to try not to cost him any more money than I have to. If I weren't moving so soon I'd apply for food stamps here, if only to stock up and take stuff with when I move so I'm not eating all his food, but I imagine Indiana wouldn't like me doing that. If that is an option, I'll go with that instead. I've been paying taxes here for years, just like you do in Wisconsin. Otherwise I'd like to figure out some way to help out until I find work. No idea how long it will take me to find a job once I move. Hopefully only days, but I'm not counting on it being that easy.

This is what I suggest you do, get a job before you move! Stay in Indiana until you can have things lined up in Wisconsin. I would think if your moving you have a little money put away at least 3 months worth of living expenses? Plenty of jobs out there, where in Wisconsin will you be moving to?

You couldn't do a ten second google search and take the eligibility quiz that the State of WI furnishes online? The taxpayers are overburdened enough without having to tell YOU how to get food assistance (before you even live in WI, no less) just because you don't have the motivation to lift a hand.

Here's an idea: Get off your rear end, look it up, and find out yourself.

I'm really not sure of the eligibility guidelines, but I would think there is a minimum residency requirement for that type of assistance.

If only it were so simple! Been looking for a new job since I got fired from my last one in March. No luck. Now, due to various circumstances beyond my control I have no choice but to be moved out of here ASAP. I don't have time to job hunt before the move. Sadly I don't have money for moving expenses, either. I had been trying to save up money as I originally planned to move to North Dakota with three other friends, but my job drastically cut back my hours around the holidays last year and never really fixed it. They wanted to get more money for themselves and not pay their employees. Then I had a customer file a false complaint against me, and management took her side and I was fired. About the only money I had was from my tax returns, which has now all been spent. I don't have a dollar to my name at this moment.

I'm going to be moving in with a friend in Appleton. He's doing me a HUGE favor as he's willing to cover all the costs of moving me into his place until I find a job and can pay it all back. I'm still hoping my unemployment benefits will be reinstated soon so I can cover some of the costs myself and help cover food, but it's not looking too likely at the moment. I've been told in the Unemployment forums here that Indiana is pretty bad about taking a while to get anything done and when I called to check a couple days ago I got a very quick "no" when I asked if there was any progress.

I'm not happy about any of the current situation, but there's nothing I can do to change current circumstances and put off the move.

I thought Wisconsin gave out food stamps with the welcome packages??? LOL. It used to be you didn't have to live in Wisc. to get welfare food stamps. Years ago, they went through the records and found people living in Chicago, who would travel every month to Wisc. to pick up their welfare checks. Honestly this is part of the reason I wanted to leave the Badger State. Generous welfare will kill the state, and it is. Why? With their generous benefits, they attract these kind of people. My guess is the OP ends up as a ward of the state in Wisc.
