I have a dilema.

My wife passed away and I want to get out of Houston only all of my doctors are at MD Anderson. Not many who are not cancer patients can say that...but I am blessed because I am in a cancer prevention treatment program.

I can return to Chattanooga - where I am from and my mother, sister and grandson still live or I can join my son in Mineral Point WI - which is where he believe's heaven is ----- and a lot of snow to shovel.

Can anyone tell me from Mineral Point experience if that is as great a place to live as my son declares? hE SAYS IT IS SOMETHING OUT OF CURRIER AND iVES and is magic.

You know, Mineral Point is over 50 miles away from Madison, so I suspect you won't get many responses here in the Madison forum. I'll move this thread out to the general Wisconsin forum, where I think you're likelier to get some answers.

It's hard to answer this without knowing what you like in a place to live. Have you been up here often? You (or someone else) would have to drive a lot farther for some goods and services, and if you're used to Chattanooga and Houston winters, your first few might be brutal.

That being said, Mineral Point is beautiful, friendly, historic, quaint, etc. Awesome place to live if you're into those kind of towns. Lots of interesting geography in the area too, which is a huge plus for me.

I'm reading plenty of skepticism in your post, which is probably a good thing. I'm not sure there's anything particularly "magical" about it, but hey, I've never actually lived there. I wouldn't move there just because your son says it's great; ask him what's so great about it and make sure those things appeal to you.

I don't know if I have even been to Mineral Point, but if you don't mind me weighing in...

If you are retired (or if you have a large amount of personal time saved up and can use most of it at once), I would do a prolonged visit to your son's. A month? Two months?

I love Wisconsin. I love small town Wisconsin, especially when they are historic and active--which is one of the only things I hear about Mineral Point: how historic, pretty, active downtown, etc. But small towns are not for everyone. And I LOVE the snow and cold. In fact, I would be worried about southern Wisconsin not being snowy and cold enough for me. Other people absolutely HATE any sign of winter. I grew up in Wisconsin and now live in Arizona, so I read both forums and it is extremely interesting. I think it is hard to get a good opinion of weather on a forum, but especially these two. So, you need to experience it yourself. Keep in mind that it takes at least one year to adjust from warm to cold climate.
