Rewey is a very rural area in southwestern Wisconsin. I think it's honestly a little podunk place on the way to Platteville. Winters are tough because of the terrain, hills and very curvy roads. About an hour from Madison and maybe 25 minutes to Dubuque.

No, Rewey is not a cultural mecca or tourist town. Just a rural agricultural town.

Not really looking for tourist type towns. More mellow outdoors kinda stuff "arthritis". ;( Husband retired and looking to relocate from California "which I hate". Love the backcountry life style but we got a little one and he needs to have things to do. Saw a old historic home in Rewey and thought for that house I mite live down south. Thanks for the info.

People move from places like Wisconsin to places like California to relieve arthritis symptoms.

If arthritis is an issue, seriously reconsider moving this far north. Long cold winters and arthritis are not a good mix.

Oh no... I love it up north just gotta bundle up. Been up north in Maine it's pretty cold there too but I love those states up there. My husband picked Wisconsin he's been there before. I get to pick the house. I'm leaning toward northwest part of Wisconsin. Trying to find our forever home.

I hope you can forgive my presumptuousness for just one more moment, but here's a question: Has your husband ever actually lived through a northern winter? "Being there" and "living there" are two whole different games, especially as one becomes more advanced in age. Obviously it's your decision to make as a couple, but there's a good reason why many, many people who erstwhile spent their entire lives up here move south as they get older. It's just something to consider particularly in light of the "arthritis" mention you made in a previous post.

That said, if your mind is made up, we may be able to make additional recommendations based on more information. So far you've mentioned "more mellow outdoors kind of stuff." Can you elaborate on that? How close do you want/need to be to vital services such as medical care, in which case proximity to Milwaukee or the Twin Cities may be in order? What's your budget? What kind of terrain are you looking for -- hills, flat farmland, forests and/or fishing lakes, etc.?

Ya. Our heart set on your beautiful state. My husband retired coastguard so we have done winters in Alaska, Maine and Michagan. Been looking at towns like Fifield ( Price county)and Winter (Sawyer county). Love, love, love the outdoors and all it has to offer. Got a small boy and would want for him to do 4h type activities , boys scouts, football. He's all boy and were always going on nature walks "old people version of hiking" lol. We want to be able to do ATV , Snowmobiling, and of course fishing. We're in pretty good health. We have life flight where we live now. Looking for a small town about an hour or more from any city. Like woodsy type areas . Old Historic town would b ideal. We live in an old historic mining town of about 1500 full time residents now and I drive a good hour to get groceries. So we're not strangers to being out in the boonies. Thanks for y'all input

If you want lakes and forests, the Rewey area really shouldn't be in the running. The northern third of the state is where you'll find the bulk of lakes and forest cover. Accordingly, Sawyer and Price counties have much more of what you're looking for. Each has dozens if not hundreds of lakes plus a handful of state forests. In addition, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest system basically surrounds Price and Sawyer counties and then there's the huge Ottawa National Forest just across the border in upper Michigan. Premium real estate, especially lakefront property, can get pricey up there since Chicago and Milwaukee folks use it as a resort area. But as long as you're off-lake you should be able to find something on a nice spacious plot of land for a reasonable price.

In fact, if you want more bang for your buck, you might try looking across the border in upper Michigan. It offers everything northern Wisconsin does but being just out of reach of the city weekenders makes it quite a bit cheaper.

Whether in upper Michigan or northern Wisconsin, there are plenty of snowmobile/ATV trails up that way. It's not unheard of for kids to ride snowmobiles to school after a decent snowfall.
