Hitting home how? If you're an atheist you're an atheist, you don't believe in god & find religion ridiculous. It's really not that complicated.

The fear also extends to other concerns beyond freedoms, such as the influence of religion on scientific inquiry/innovation, climate change policy, conservation measures, etc.

The same could be said for people who are afraid of you and your way of thinking. If we become less religous in terms of thinking about the Creator; silly arguments about "Mother Earth", Climate Change and the bastardization of marriage become more real every day. Sorry buddy but a lot of America doesn't drink your koolaid. You mention freedom - there is nothing more dangerous to American freedom than the close minded, progressive aethist.

What's it like living in Portland? You must fit in really well.

Yes, I know that. And your previous statement could be said about your own position, stated earlier: christians who feel the need to advertise their positions loudly and act forcefully to shape policy could be doing so out of a sense of internal instability. They "protest too much."

But in reality, people are individuals and have different reasons for what they do.

It's quite ironic that your "koolaid" reference comes from a tragedy stemming from blind, cultish religious faith. (Jonestown, 1978)

Even more dangerous is the person, regardless of ideology, who uses stereotypes and reactionary rhetoric rather than rational ideas in order to argue a point.

PDX is ok. There is a fine Libertarian slant out here. Sort of a - You do your thing - I will do mine.

This city and state are not near as whacky/progressive as a few loud people would like to have the rest of the country think.

I do not miss the constant whining of the "we are smarter than you" set in Madison with their in your face liberal/progressive causes all the time.
