I would check out Columbus. The town is going through a transition with a new forward looking government. Beautiful downtown between Sun Prairie and Beaver Dam. Quick shot to Madison - great school system according to some internet sites although aging schools - great teachers. Very very safe. Good health care with a large hospital, Amtrak, 2 golf courses and only 5000 population.

Columbus is a good town for the most part.. It is on the edge.of two worlds..fancy "safe" city world and rural farm country world. (I grew up 20/min outside of Columbus)
