Greetings - My significant other and I will be relocating to the Green Bay area mid-late October. We plan to rent for a year as we get to know the area better, then make a decision on where we might like to purchase a home. We visited a couple of weeks ago, but did not find a place to rent. Now we are looking remotely and are struggling a bit. In looking at rentals, we are finding it difficult to determine what the neighborhoods are like. We've seen rental duplexes in the East/West De Pere area that look alright, and we looked at a single family home on Finger Rd. in Preble that seems nice for about the same price. Are these areas ok? We also looked at a few places on the west side that seemed a bit more run down. My question is, are there any areas or neighborhoods that we should avoid and other areas we should focus on? Are there any bad parts of town? We feel like we do not have a good sense of the neighborhoods and are struggling to make an informed decision about renting in a safe, quiet, clean, community in an accessible location to the hospitals. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

note: I've perused the forums for answers and most threads about Green Bay seem to devolve into being debates on how great or terrible the town is. We are not looking for any arguments, just trying to find out more information about the various parts of town so that we feel good about our rental decision. Thank you.

There are only a couple/few "bad" areas in town, and honestly, it's not "bad" as in a real city bad. Basically, stay away from the city core - it's more nuanced than that, but it's a good broad pointer. You can easily drive through town (if you are able) and see for yourself which areas are more run-down and thereby worse neighborhoods. De Pere is consistently good, the Preble area is OK but does have some so-so neighborhoods surrounding it.

I agree with the previous post as far as the "city core" and De Pere. If there's a specific hospital you want to be close to, that might influence your decision. Howard has some newer properties and is close to St Mary's. East DePere and Bellevue would be better for the east side hospitals. I think DePere is the most charming and offers a nice little downtown. If it were me, I would stay out of Green Bay, select a suburb and read the reviews of the complex if you get an apartment. Good luck.
