Living fairly close to Kenosha, but on the Illinois side I've been curious about the city. It's arguably the best and most independent medium sized city in my area, as it's not just a collection of a few strip malls and endless subdivisions like many suburban areas around here are.

My question is, do you think Kenosha is more in line with the Chicago area or the Milwaukee area? For statistical purposes Kenosha and Racine Counties are included in the Chicago metropolitan area, but to me it seems like Kenosha and Racine favor Milwaukee.

I think Racine is still part of the Milwaukee MSA.

Kenosha may technically fall more under Chicago's economic sphere these days, but culturally it still seems to look more northward than southward.

According to this map, which may not be 100% accurate, Racine County is apart of the Chicago metro area, I was kind of surprised myself. The metra does run to Kenosha, so I can see Kenosha being within the Chicagoland metro area.

In that map Racine is included in someone's idea of "Chicagoland," but statistically it's a part of Metro Milwaukee (the Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha Combined Statistical Area).

I'm not a resident of the Racine or Kenosha areas, but it's my vague understanding that Kenosha identifies a little more with Chicago and Racine identifies a bit more with Milwaukee.

According to the map you just showed me Racine County is not a part of Milwaukee Metropolitan area.

From my experience,Kenosha is more Milwaukee oriented. But it's close. Kenosha Co. has grown a lot though, and many of the newcomers have been from Illinois,so. Racine Co.,despite what anyone says,is clearly more identified with Milwaukee.

That's because the map is only showing the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis MSA, not the Greater Milwaukee Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The article says that Racine is its own MSA:

"The Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Combined Statistical Area is made up of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area (Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington and Ozaukee counties), the Racine Metropolitan Statistical Area (Racine County), the Beaver Dam Micropolitan Statistica Area (Dodge County), the Watertown-Fort Atkinson Micropolitan Area (Jefferson County), and the Whitewater-Elkorn Micropolitan Area (Walworth County) according to the U.S. Census.[1] Updated definitions released in February 2013 added Dodge, Jefferson and Walworth Counties to the Milwaukee CSA. Kenosha is halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee but is part of the Chicago CSA metropolitan area as Kenosha has more residents who commute to Chicago."

However, the Racine MSA and other entities join with the Milwaukee MSA to form the much larger Greater Milwaukee CSA.

I find it absolutely bizarre that the Census Bureau designates Racine as its own MSA. I'd like to know the reasoning behind that decision.

I have to agree. If anything Racine is more a satellite city to Milwaukee or Kenosha.
