Moving to Wisconsin. Around the Appleton/OshKosh area. Anyone know how much it cost to switch your car plates/title to Wisconsin from another state? Also, license? Thanks

My husband just received his Wisconsin drivers' license and that was $28. He did have to have his birth certificate and proof of residency because it was his first license in the State of Wisconsin.

$144.50 for the car ($69.50 title fee + $75 plate fee, including 1 year of registration) + $10 loan filing fee (if you have one) + $5 counter fee at the DMV.

$28 for the license.

Old thread, but I wanted to ask two question.

Do you have to renew plates every year, or are there 2yr stickers available?

Do you have to pay property tax or a yearly tax on vehicles in Wisconsin? Is this paid at the DMV or through the county?

1) Must be done yearly, except motorcycles, which is every two years.

2) There is no personal property tax in WI. Annual plate renewal fee may vary depending on plate type or commercial versus personal... but for any given plate type, the renewal fee is the same regardless of vehicle value.

Drive with your out-of-state plates until they expire, then (unless you want to drive back to renew there) you wouldn't have any options but to get your car registered in WI

$75 per year for basic passenger car plates, BUT, there are a small handful of cities and counties that charge an extra "wheel tax" that gets added on. Most of those are $20, so if you live in one of those cities or counties you pay $95 to renew. In other words WisDOT adds this amount into your annual renewal fee and then collects it on behalf of the city or county. You do not have to go someplace separate to pay the local wheel tax.

Personalized plates & special plates (Packers, Brewers, save the wildlife, colleges, etc etc) cost more.

Pickup trucks are either $75, $84, or $106 per year depending on weight.

If your car is listed as "garaged" in one of the southeastern Wisconsin counties and is 1996 model year or newer, it must pass an emissions test every other year. The emissions test itself is free, but of course any repairs made to get the car into condition to pass emissions are not.
