WI and MN rank very similar in total cost of living, tax burden, and services offered. Being a WI native, I would of course prefer the Badger State, but think you may want to look elsewhere if it is a significant change that you seek.

Depends on location and perceived or experienced need for amenities. If your wanting an acre lot and
want some elbow room Appleton vacinity would be our choice. We lived in Green Bay, Oshkosh, Wauwatosa, Appleton. You may find LaCross a good choice as you can be relatively close to Minnesota? Northern Wisconsin may necessitate a condo otherwise be prepared to snow blow tons of snow and fightsubzero temps.and few stores.. You may want to research hospital locations and access to emergent care. If you get too far off grid your dead meat!!!

One of the biggest differences is that MN has an estate tax of up to 16% and WI has no estate tax.

Ram2 and GS

Ram2 is correct that we are semi retiring and not looking for high end housing, our home in TN will be nearly identical to our WI home and will cost us about $217,000. to build in Tennessee (nice but not high end), our WI home will sell for about $50,000 more than the cost of the TN home.

The taxes on our WI home are about $400 per month while the new house in TN will be about $100. per month. There will be no income tax on my retirement income or my wife's income but there is a higher sales tax in TN. Figuring all this together, we will save about $9000. per year in taxes (no I'm not kidding).

As far as services, I have family who have lived in the area we are moving to (Cleveland-Chattanooga) for about 20 years, we have been there several times; we have found the "services" to be about the same but if we had school age children I would give a slight edge to most of WI.

It is just our opinion (wife and I) but based on the areas of TN we have looked at to semi-retire in, we are not giving up anything.

Hopefully this helps others who are looking at relocating.

we have been all over the map looking for a place that doesn't have such harsh winters, we're up in Ely Minnesota and we mountain bike and hiking and love kayaking the Cleveland Tennessee area came up for us as well, we would be looking for a place in a nearby small town. However the problem for us we worry about the methamphetamine problems that are plaguing the small towns across the country, we have hardly any crime here now where we are.

To the op Hayward WI. is a nice community as well as Cable WI. I just don't know if Cable has apartments. If we are going to keep living in the cold box then I want to move to one of them two areas. Lots of people that know Ely think is really grate and it's really a good fishing town and if you want a place with apartment living like you have now and you like fishing Ely would fit for you it's living cost from you would still be cheep even if you didn't qualify for rental subsidies and had to pay full amount, that full amount is about 450.00 per month.
Contact The Ely Housing Authority and that 450per month is including utilities. But here's the bad part, groceries cost a lot. We shop out of town an hour away in Virginia MN. So you definitely want to have a car if you live here. There's also a medical clinic here essentia health and a hospital.
