Bummato,

Ref. your tax questions; when you buy a car you pay the 5.5% sales tax on the purchase price, at the time of purchase. After that there are no other taxes on the car. The month you buy the car will be when your yearly registration fee (currently $75.) is due. Please note that there will be other one time fee's, like the title fee and a lien filing fee (if you have a loan) when you purchase a vehicle.

Once you own a home or property, you will get your yearly property tax bill in December. You can pay it all at once or pay half then pay the other half mid way thru the year.

You will find excellent eating places through out the Northwoods and I know there are coffee shops in Wausau, Tomahawk, Minocqua, Boulder Junction, St. Germain & Eagle River.

There is a nice web site; JohnDee.com which has web cams all around the WI Northwoods. If you go to the web site look on the left side of the home page and you will see the link for Northwoods cam network.

Towns in Vilas County include: Manitowish Waters, Presque Isle, Conover, Phelps, Eagle River, St. Germain, Woodruff, Lac du Flambeau, Boulder Junction, Winchester, Land O' Lakes, and unincorporated townships. If you investigate the Vilas County GIS parcel maps they are VERY detailed and quite excellent. I was doing a GIS project for work and found the county info to be great. As mentioned previously, look for more reasonably priced properties with no water frontage because valuations will be less as well as property taxes. I know Plum Creek township has some properties that abut the Northern Highland State Forest, similar scenario in parts of St. Germain just to the south.

My family owns a lakehouse 6 miles west of Eagle River, and my granpda had a lakehouse just north of St. Germain (just west of Eagle River) while I was growing up, so I've spent a large bulk of my time in the area.

As long as you're cool with the cold and snow, Eagle River would make a great retirement spot. It's a beautiful area with tons of trees and lakes, and there is plenty to do since it's touristy. It's not far from Ashwaubenon so as far as going to Packer games you'd be good. I'd recommend moving there in a heartbeat.

It took longer than expected to put our house on the market. Put the for sale sign up in July and sold our home in August. We need to be out by October 21st and driving to Eagle River or somewhere close by. We are working with a realtor, unfortunately, we have not found a home to buy or even to rent while we look at homes. Needless to say I am a little bit frantic. Help!!!!

Could someone tell us where we would be able to find a storage facility and are there any extended stay hotels close by?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Probably better off looking around Minocqua, Rhinelander, or Iron Mountain for "extended stay" type hotels since they're similarly sized areas more or less. Iron Mountain is quite a bit farther. Eagle River doesn't have a whole lot. I had to stay in Eagle River on business pretty often a few years back, and there was a decent hotel, but no suites that I can remember. I usually tried to stay in Iron Mountain, Rhinelander, or Minocqua areas because they had more to offer. Or there was a nicer place in Iron River, MI, but I don't really remember extended stay up there either.

Craigslist shows tons of rental listings in that area of the state... There are always a lot available up there.

FYI there is a VA medical center in Iron Mountain and a community clinic in Rhinelander. You probably already know about that.

If you aren't set on Eagle River, there are a lot of nice places up there, including across the border in Michigan. And if the winter doesn't drive you out of there, you'll probably love the area.

Thank you! I will try looking for hotels in those areas. I don't think the weather will drive us away since that is the reason we are moving up there!

Mother in law has a place in Minocqua ( actually) Arbor Vitae or Woodruff which all run together and are easily accessible. Her place is on a small lake and the taxes are not awful. Seems to be a decent amount of things to do all year. Look in the smaller communities such as above just outside the bigger name towns and you should find something and still be within a few miles of amenities.

They can refer you to housing and storage options. The folks @ the ER chamber are quite nice IME
They were really good to my relatives who bought/sold at different times, then permanently relocated to
the northwoods

Eagleriver.org
800-359-6315

Finding rentals and services will be more word of mouth than online IME up there.
Although winters are brutal, summers are the real payback up there(!)
