Don't forget about the Fur Conference of North America, that was in Stevens Point last year.

Point is a good place to live. Low crime, adequate shopping, and best of all, not that many right wing conservatives. Wausau and Stevens Point used to be pretty similar, but Wausau has become victim to a lot of brain drain and sprawl, so now it is largely suburban with the urban portion deteriorating. That all equates to more republicans.

The best places to live are definitely the communities that vote democratic and have larger universities in them.

I worked in Point for the past 3 years, took a job in Wausau 6 months ago. I still prefer Point and we usually do our shopping there. I like the area and what it offers. People are nice. Parks are good. Restaurants are good.
The Energy Fair in Custer is a great event.

I still have my Iola car show T shirt from 1980-something.

Stevens Point is a great town. I'd recommend it highly.

Personally, I think Stevens Point is a bit bland. The topography is flat....not a favorite of mine. Also, the downtown has not much to offer, IMO. Some people are trying to compare it to Wausau, but I don't think it's a fair comparison. Wausau has more to offer, is surrounded by much beauty, and the downtown is much more vibrant than in Stevens Point. Point just seems like a quiet little town, in comparison. Wausau made the mistake, years ago, of turning down the 4 year university, so Point does have that. Other than that, though, what else is there?

We love the band concerts in Point. The Farmshed Potlucks and I think they have one of the best Farmers Markets. Everyone in the market has to grow their own items. In Wausau they don't. So you get a lot of peaches and other things that don't grow in central Wisconsin. It drives me nuts.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Point or Wausau. They are close enough that you can drive to one or another. I would stay in the city where I have a job at, just for the fact that in the Winter you may find it difficult to drive from one city to the other when there is a snow storm. We live in Rib Mt and drive down to Point all the time.

I lived in Point for 28 1/2 years of my life and am glad I no longer do. It feels really small townish (which may be a positive for you), there are tons of hicks and bars, the same bands cycle through, there's not that much to do (especially in the winter), and the movie theatres mentioned just show the basic stuff. The best thing probably is the green circle trail as some people have brought up.
