I'll say that while Wisconsinites may come across as racist, it may just be a lack of education on the subject/exposure. I grew up in rural Wisconsin and my high school (graduating class of maybe 1200) had I think 1 or 2 black students. None of my friends or acquaintances had any issues with them, but I know people who have problems with any minority, whether its black, latino, etc, because they just arent used to it. They see violence on the news and assume that it's everyone...while that may seem racist, I think its just a lack of understanding. We are used to the exception and not the rule, because the exception is what gets news ratings and a story.

And this post isn't to point any blame at the Wisconsin education system or anything like that. Its a problem Americans (and the world) have in general.

No Wisconsin is not more racist than the southern states of yesteryear by far. You will not get lynched and white people dressed in ridiculous robes won't come out and burn crosses in front of your house. You can use the same water fountains, same toilets and sit at the front of the bus. People will hold the door for you, random people will say your kid is cute, make comments to you in the store, etc. If white people stare or seem uncomfortable its more due to lack of exposure and not knowing how to interact with you than anything.
However, I will say that there are some stupid stereo types that some people abide by about the poor and people on public assistance and suburban whitebread tends to look down on anything that seems ghetto and doesn't understand inner city culture and where people who grew up in that might be coming from regarding a lot of social issues.

Milwaukee is the most racially segregated city in the country and ranks as the worst place in the nation to be African American. I adopted a child of color and lived in Wauwatosa, and found the kids to snub her.

Is Wisconsin more racist than even the old South states of yesteryear?

In a word: NO.

I don't think so, but I have seen Confederate flags emblazoned across the backs of pickup trucks (Which looks so weird since we're in Wisconsin.) I saw them in South Carolina, as well, when we lived there. Oklahoma, too. I guess it's just one of those "counter-culture" things that some people think makes them look like rebels, I don't know? It just makes me think they're insensitive and possibly ignorant of history.

Recently a house in my neighborhood made the news when they hung a swastika banner by their front door. I could see it from my house and it was disturbing. The people were boneheads and were evicted shortly after this display went public. I was glad to see people reacting in an appropriately horrified manner when this occurred.

Overall, I think racism surely exists and if we aren't careful to speak out against it, history does tend to repeat. Wisconsin doesn't strike me as being any more racist than anywhere else, though. I wouldn't live here if it was.

What? Milwaukee has had liberal/progressive/socialist leaders for over 100 years. How could it possible be racist?!

(answer: because it has had liberal/progressive/socialist leaders for over 100 years)

WI voted for Obama twice. So you're saying that racists vote for black men. But they don't vote for white women (Hillary). I'm sure you have some logic in there somewhere. But it only makes sense to you.

Or if you actually used more than 2 brain cells to think, you would realize that there is almost no white-on-black crime in the state. No lynchings. No history of slavery. The Germanic/Slavic people who settled the cold dark plains of Wisconsin still keep to themselves as their ancestors did. You can't expect WI to be as open-minded as, say, the SF Bay area.

Speaking of the SF Bay area... liberal center of America, blacks ONLY live around Oakland/Richmond and East Palo Alto. Its totally segregated. Blacks are totally unwelcome in other areas, especially in rich, white, liberal enclaves like Russian Hill in SF and Palo Alto proper. Take a look at a demographic map.
