There are so many more employment opportunities and things to do in Houston. I agree.

We moved here a year ago in late Aug. Nice, mild fall and then a major nor'easter before a brutal, long winter. A lot of below zero weather and no thaws that I notices until well into spring. A lot of snow, a big blizzard in April and the bay was still iced over until May. Another terrible, damaging storm in June that caused floods that are still not recovered from. All of this, I've been told, is a bit unusual even for this area, so I am interested to see how year 2 will be (so far, the fall has been colder than last year.) It wasn't a huge shock coming from cold, snowy western New Hampshire, but a bit extreme.

Crime is not a big problem that I've seen, but we are in a nice neighborhood. We go to the parks often and have not seen any needles, so not "awash in needles" by any stretch of the imagination. But there is definitely a problem with drugs and alcohol here, much like most of the country (including the small town in NH we moved from.)

Overall, beautiful, well-kept city but would be a culture and weather-shock for many coming up from bigger cities in the south. VERY isolated up here. If it weren't for Amazon and Duluth, we'd have a much harder time.

Plenty of scenic areas to your east and northeast if you haven't checked them all out, including the Northern Highland Forest (Vilas and Oneida counties), Ottawa National Forest and Sylvania Wilderness (UP of Michigan), and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness (Ontonagon County)- was just there a couple of months ago. I prefer Vilas County, plan on retiring there as I enjoy all the lakes, trails, state forests, etc. An item to keep in mind is that the average elevation of Vilas County is around 1,650-1,700ft elevation compared to around 800ft elevation for Ashland. Only the western and NW portions of Vilas County are in the Lake Superior Snowbelt, whereas Ashland and Iron counties are fully included in the Lake Superior Snowbelt.
