I lived in Marshfield from 2000-2006.
The good:
- First-rate healthcare in town.There are people who move there just to be next to the Marshfield Clinic.
- Good schools. This isn't subjective, you can look at the numbers for state testing. Marshfield Senior High has been outstanding for a long time.
- Pleasant countryside, particularly to the south and southwest as you get into the mounds.
The bad:
- It's the most isolated of the four Central Wisconsin cities (Marshfield, Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids.)
- The streets really stunk when I lived there and this was a result of the general attitude about keeping taxes as low as possible. I consider myself conservative, but I'd rather pay a bit more in local taxes and not have to get an alignment on my car every year. If you're a Minnesota progressive, I don't know that Marshfield is a great fit.
- If you're into cultural events, it doesn't compare to Stevens Point or Wausau. When I lived there, it had to be the most NASCAR-centric city north of the Mason-Dixon Line, per capita.
Marshfield is a place many people could be happy. I do have to say that Stevens Point is the better place to live and is only another 30 miles away, connected by a four-lane highway. So, even if you have a job in Marshfield, it would be an easy commute.
I'd also throw out Eau Claire as an option if you're okay with a bigger town - about 65,000.
