Is this a doable commute? Google says about an hour, but have to wonder what the roads are like in the winter and what the traffic is like. Any thoughts?

Hi OP. I would make a guess that it could be 1-1.5 hours transit on a good day. Mostly state hiways and thru several towns. Assume winter/poor weather/road construction could up to double any travel times here. Not sure your plans or why you may be looking at the various locations but except for short term emergency needs I would not consider a daily transit like that.
My .02 only.

Home prices are better in stevens point, and I like the feel of the town... but the job is at Appleton. Seriously contemplating this commute, although may be hard to do back and forth each day...

I would advise against this if you're doing it 5x a week.

Agree. Housing cost delta is not worth the extra hassle/transportation costs this would put on your lifestyle.

Appleton is a very nice area - High on our relocation list. You can do much worse on this planet than living/working in Appleton.

I must admit though, Hwy 10 is much nicer now than the "old days."

Yeah, Appleton is far from my favorite place, and I too would rather live in Point, but this trade off is not worth it.

Yep, maybe if it was a job that allowed the majority of the days to be work-from-home with just occasional long transits maybe it could make more sense.
I used to hate winter driving from Marquette county to the Fox Valley, that east/west route could be nasty in strong snow and wind.

OP, guess if this is still something you are considering after the above suggestions, all I could add is only rent when you move here. If you must try it then worst case its a short term issue you have to deal with while you get settled. But I am with the others that this isn't a daily transit to make.

It would actually be 4 days per week rather than 5. But that still sounds like 8 hours per week which is essentially a full work day... Kind of defeats the purpose of working 4 days.

In truth, if you drive 70 mph, you can do that commute in a little under an hour. It's a very quick commute most times of the year with a four-lane.

Look, you obviously want to live in Point, not Appleton. Based on my experience, you will regret it if you live in Appleton just because of this factor. One of the worst things in the world is having to go home to a place you don't want to be.

Appleton is not a dump. I quite like the downtown and having Lawrence U right there. But when I think of Appleton, I think of cookie-cutter subdivisions. You know, where the houses look alike and stand about fifteen feet from each other. There is a younger demographic for which that kind of lifestyle is their life's dream. It's where they want to be. It's a lot fo sprawl and if you like the pretty countryside, you will not find it there. The closest thing to a hill is a highway overpass.I live on the opposite side of the state now, but each time I make a trip past it, the sprawl has consumed more countryside. Pretty soon it will stretch to Fremont. It's just a very different town and area compared to Point.

Perhaps a bit of a compromise, if you aren't set on being right in Point is to look in the Amherst/Amherst Jct./Nelsonville area, right off of 10. Many, many people live there and commute to Appleton. It's about fifteen minutes outside of Point, so you would cut a half-hour total each day off of your commute.

I live a little north of Point. We had a friend who for years commuted from here to Green Bay. He didn't want to move his family. Took him about 90 minutes. Also know someone in Point who teaches just outside of Madison. Same reason not moving the family just yet. That is also about 90 minutes. Appleton is not a bad drive from Point. Little more then an hour. My DH does it once a week for work in all weather. He has to meet with clients there.
