Everyone says that lake Geneva is beautiful and fun and worth visiting, on the internet.
Is it, really? small towns with tourism hype or build up their image for the public, and then it turns out, there is not much there for a big city person. ( to a family or from an uncultured simple area, then it probably looks great)

So other than the lake and restaurants and shopping, is it worth spending a weekend?

carnelian, my friend,

for the reasons you just mentioned (lake, restaurants, shopping), I would say: YES!

Way back when (like 1970) I used to go up there to visit a friend who lived up in Fontana. Back THEN it was a wonderful place indeed. Even the city of Lake Geneva itself. But of course, not unlike Door County, it got Chicagoficated and to me lost its charm by the later 80's. Now it's just a tourist zoo much of the year. If you're into that kind of thing go right ahead and hang out there.

It is way too overcrowded in Lake Geneva along with it being too hot in the summer. The lake country of rural Vilas County is where I prefer to be.

Nope. Nothing here for a big city person like you OP. Please stay in your big city.

We uncultured folk who live in this simple area would appreciate that.

Lake Geneva is a bit overrated, now that I think about it. A big city person would probably prefer a weekend in Madison. Lake Geneva might make for a better day trip

A true big city person would only visit rivaling or bigger cities to validate his choice of place of living.

No, a big city person can appreciate a smaller city. Racine is an underrated spot that comes to mind that a Chicagoan may enjoy. It’s more urban than Lake Geneva and you’ve got Lake Michigan. Better to have a lake you can’t see across

I need a short vacation and I considered the Quad cities or southern Illinois or Detroit area. Too far for too little. I have done a LOT of traveling, including in midwest but my interest is short, fleeting then I leave the same day. And I hate driving on highways around Chicago, so congested! Been to Milwaukee a few times. I feel that the longer away you travel, the trip must be justified, or worth it.

Have been to Lake Geneva, Switzerland

You didn't say where you'd be coming from unless I missed it.

Worth it for a weekend, sure. Much more than that and you'll have seen pretty much all there is to see.
