If you are worried about economies in trouble then I wouldn't recommend going to Michigan. However I think that a case could be made for either school. Madison and Ann Arbor have been called similar. I chose Wisconsin because every person I meet here seems to want to be the best at whatever they love. Really ambitious. One of the reasons Google is opening up an office here. Why we produce more fortune 500 executives than any other public school. Another reason I chose Madison is because I intend to join the Peace corp after school and it has a great reputation with them. Badger Basketball-Big 10 champs and Tournament perennials.Badger football-Camp Randall and tailgates rival Michigan and the Big House. Badger Hockey, Track and Feild, Ultimate Frisby, vollyball, I'm sure I forgot some. All these programs are strong with many National Championships.Feels like a bigger city than it is yet to date keeps some of its small town charm. Low crime rate, unemployment rate. Madison is the bubble that your parents wish they raised you in. A great stepping stone to the world.

That case can definitely be made for either school. The economy in WI is sadly suffering as well.
Michigan is technically considered the better school, though. That's kind of unavoidable.

I am a Spring '07 graduate of the UW and you will never for a minute regret going there. The people there are very diverse as far as personalities and interests go and people for the most part are very live and let live which is great. Looking for jobs, one thing that constantly grabbed attention was the fact that I went to the UW. All good things ranging from "great city", "great school", "work hard, play hard." Nothing bad. I know for a fact that going to the UW has helped me greatly in getting to where I am now careerwise. I was from out of state and had a mixed group of wisco friends and other out of states, its absolutely no problem. Everything that people previous said about it preparing you is really true, I wouldn't change a thing about the UW.
