I've been living in Chicago suburbs for the last 21 yrs and craving for beautiful scenery and a small town atmosphere. I am 51 yr "young" and I past my "socializing in town" long ago. At this age, I am interested in a different kind of life.
This week I took a drive again to Door County and although it is winter and no snow, it looked very nice (never been there in summer). I am looking for such an area, a small town where everybody knows everybody. where the time "stands still", people are nice, decent and caring for each other, where there IS some quality of life and you can make a decent/modest living. Where people have some class and pride in maintaining their properties. Is there an other area like Door County ?
As much as I can't wait to relocate, I panic thinking of what's the next step once I put my house on the market. Where do you go from here, where do you live till you find a house to buy, are there any jobs in a such turistic area in winter ?....what kind of business can you open (what would be need it ?)
Does anyone know anything about this area of Wisconsin or a similar one and the people there or about the businesses, the opportunities ? Anything at all ?
I did some reseach and I found that wayyyyyyy .... to many homes and businesses are for sale !!! What's going on ? It seams like everyone is leaving the area .
Please help !
Thre truth is that Door Co. has just been another tourist slum since industry (shipbuilding, motors) left circa 1990.

Every year about 1 in 5 properities goes for sale; of that number only 1 in 5 sells- in a typical year, the last few not being "typical".

As of the present, it's just another area ravaged by free trade and populated mostly by those who either love the place, cannot leave, or else are just hanging on.

If you do relocate, lose the Illinois plates as soon as you can.

Best wishes.

for the life of me I can't ever remember repping Geechie North, but for some reason it says I have to spread the love before I can again. So one rep for Geechie North here!

I suggest you go to "The Stein" or "Redroom" and extoll the virtues of free trade to the recently unemployed Finacantieri (Bay Boat) folks.

Or to the old Emerson Motors crowd.

You do have health insurance?

It speaks volumes about Northern Wisconsin, when their very own elite, are above accepting tourism dollars, sometimes rejecting the industry and all of its associated purveyors of misery, the tourists themselves. At the same time, these elite members of society, reject any compromise that could keep "good" jobs in the state.

Drowning is tragic. Drowning in a glass of water is stupid.

Yeah, if only industry would return to an area that is hundreds of miles from the nearest interstate shipping corridor and the closest major airport, and where the workforce are apparently beggars and choosers.

Great Lakes Shipbuilders simply cannot compete with slave labor overseas.

Otherwise, were it not for the jobs situation, I'd be back in Door Co. tomorrow!

Airports are great; Lakes are better- especially inland oceans that connect to the Atlantic.

That was what made the area go until we dropped our tariffs.

Wow...just read the replies above, and am a bit blown away by this very narrow view of Door County. I am curious to know if any of the responses actually come from people living and working in Door County. Most remarks seemed to be geared toward the southern part...ie. Sturgeon Bay and its ship building.
