I guess I'm glad I live in the more "liberal" Madison. I've certainly never been cited and for $30???? You can keep a negative balance under $10 here and still check things out.

Good grief. Library fines put you in jail, but a first offense DUI gets a slap on the wrist.

Anyone else see a problem here?

Wow. I would've just paid the $30 and been done with it. I wondered if maybe there was a little more to the story ... but there were only a couple of traffic tickets in the online court records. Municipal records aren't online, so maybe she was a repeat offender. But still, seems a little extreme for overdue library books. You have to wonder if the costs associated with the warrant and jailing were even worth it.

Note to self: Always return library books on time!

The arrest may be a bit extreme, but she did steal--not just from the library, but from all of the taxpayers supporting the library. She had been repeatedly asked to return the books, yet didn't. I would prefer that libraries and other services resort to collections tactics, including garnishing wages, etc. in such cases, but as another poster said, there could be more to the story than what we see.

Amen! People don't understand that Libraries are run on tax dollars, not donations from private groups. Just like medical bills, these places can not only take you to small claims court, but it certainly can ruin your credit rating as well.
