I grew up in Cambridge and I was taught of the Peshtigo fire and of course the Chicago fire, but we actually talked more about the Peshtigo because it was in Wisconsin. It may have just been an interest of the teacher but it was taught. Interesting stuff i think and it should be taught in the state but i see no need for anybody growing up outside the region being taught this besides as a sidenote.

That is a distinct possibility. There also were huge fires in Port Huron, Holland, and Manistee in Michigan on the same day.

very very interesting post...I love history especially history so close to home...I think it only adds to it that these fires have "explanations" but there will never be a exact answer to what started these fires...I can only imagine how much worse it had to be back in the late 1800's and early 1900's
