Living in the city I almost never see any "creepy" bugs or spiders, however the further outside you go, the more there are. My parents live in washington county (just north of here) and I have seen some spiders and things, but nothing too bad or dangerous. Honestly, it is too cold for them to survive for 8 or 9 months of the year so I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

Hope that helps

Please do not worry about bugs in Wisconsin,we have weather much like in Germany and that is why Wisconsin has a large German / European Population. In fact when I was growing up many adults spoke two languages.Englisg for everyday stuff and German for the things they did not want me to Hear !
As Far as a area in Wisconsin to settle,I would recomend staying north of Milwaukee and east of Madison!

Eh, I'm a huge arachnophobe. I'm considering moving from Texas - to Madison WI for college.

Should I worry about spiders and things crawling around my bed and such? *shutters*

The slightest big-spiders make my heart jump to overdrive. I cannot be around them. I cant bring myself to squash them because it would mean getting close and risking them jumping on me.

So please let me know if Madison is a good place. Thanks.

You're from Texas and you're worried out *our* spiders? Trust me.... You'll be fine. I was considering moving to Austin and, while I didn't change my mind based on the critter factor, I was sort of dreading dealing with brown recluse, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, fire ants, palmetto bugs, cockroaches (although we do have those on campus...), killer bees, etc.

We're pretty much bug and spider free compared to Texas.

Other than 2 rattlesnakes (both of which are rare and very timid. Timber and Massasauga), theres nothing venomous or poisonous to really worry about. Unless you are allergic to bees.

No dangerous to human spiders natively in WI. There have been cases of Brown Recluses coming in via packages. Also Black Widows have come in on plants from down south (only in summer can they survive the shipping.).

Zach, spiders wont jump on you. Whats the saying that on ave you eat at least one a year in your sleep.

Megan a palmetto bug is another name for the american cockroach.

I am so scared of that stuff too!!! I live in Wisconsin and hunt and fish a lot. I have NEVER seen a snake, not even a garden snake (even thought I know they are here). We do have black widows and the brown relcouse (spelling) however, I have never heard of anyone being harmed by them, let alone seeing one. We also have rattlesnakes in the southwestern part of the state, but again, never saw one. I would say if you live in the eastern part of the state, you are 100% safe from all that crazy stuff. Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh.

Hi: This is my first post. I signed up to set people straight on termites in another thread. But since I saw this thread, I had to respond. I have more than 15 yrs. in the pest control business in Wisconsin.
Compared to other states, this state doesn't have anywhere near the pest pressure of our southern states. That being said, we do have some black widow and some brown recluse spiders. We also have areas with termites, Wisconsin's little dirty real estate secret. We have problems with carpenter ants, yellowjackets and many other structural and stored product insects. German Cockroaches, American Cockroaches(esp. downtown Milwaukee) and of course mice and rats.
I see most of my residential customers only once or twice a year. Most of them just don't want anything to get out of control. Commercial accounts, especially if they have food processing or a hotel do need more frequent service.
You really don't need pest control contracts to service you 4 times a year. I've heard some outrageous things said by our local companies, especially those that begin with T-O-B.
I spray the outside of my home in spring and early fall. I do use products that are designed for exterior use as they are microcaps and will last longer. i don't even have to spray inside anymore.
There is a service that you may be unaware of, if you have a question or an unknown insect you can ask a question or send a sample by mail or a digital photo in an e mail to Dr. Phil Pelleterri(sp.?) at UW extension and he'll identify it for you
Mosquitoes are something else but there not as bad as the taxes or the nanny state mentality that exists here.

If creepy crawleys really bother you that much, you are on the wrong planet.

No, you should worry about spider and things crawling around in your bed in Texas! You have a MUCH better chance of that down where it's so warm.
