I am looking at a prospective job in Wausau and need info best parts of town to live with children and best schools in relation to where we should decide to live. We have a child with Autism, how do the schools in Wausau handle this type of disability?

Thanks for any info!

I don't think there are any bad schools in Wausau. Anyone you talk to seems to think that their children go to the best school (this is a good thing). Please check out this resource for more information on programs and education for children with Autism in Central WI: Autism, Zia Vang, Ed by Vinni Moua
I hope you find this helpful.

Schools in the Wausau School District rank among the top in the nation. As Kandy said, they're all good schools, so it is hard to pick out one (that is, if you're referring to elementary schools). There are only two middle schools and two high schools in the district (obviously not including parochial schools), and I would honestly say they both have their advantages. However, Wausau West High offers a unique scheduling system, a planetarium, and a wider variety of after school activities (compared to Wausau East), so for that reason, I would recommend living on the west side. You can live in the city of Wausau itself, or in one of its western "suburbs", which would be Rib Mountain and Stetin. Both are nice places to live, and moth are primarily upper middle class.

Default Love the west side

We live on the west side in Stettin with a child with spina bifida. The schools have been very good to work with in terms of finding adaptations and working with our child. Stettin is a little further out of town but it's a newer area with nice homes and almost non-existent crime. I checked with a police officer about our neighborhood and he said it's the sleepy part of town. When you go out walking, you will likely see other people walking too. The loudest thing you might hear are kids playing in a pool, firecrackers around July 4th, and the occasional Harley.

Stettin Elementary school is great. Even though you have a mix of upper income and kids from the trailer park, the school just seems to work well and the teachers are friendly. Our kids never had any trouble there.

Rib Mountain is also a nice spot which is closer to Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, etc. but you will have more traffic to deal with. Property taxes might be a little lower in Rib Mountain than in Stettin. Mountain Elementary School has had good reviews but I don't know how it works with children with special needs.

You also have the DC Everest School district that butts up right against the Wausau School district.
