Hi. I am moving to Wisconsin in August. I will be working in the Whitewater area, but want to live in an active, fun area. I am looking for a safe, friendly, and relatively quiet place to live. I have read some poor reviews of apartments in the Madison area, so I was considering Lake Geneva. Any advice is appreciated.

Madison is 42 miles away from Whitewater; Lake Geneva is 24 roughly. That sounds like a very doable commute during the summer months. However, during the winter months, it is much more of a hassle with the ice and all of the drifting snows (remember that most of the commute is through farm land and subject to blowing snow).

Madison living expenses will probably be higher due to the large university and state government dominating the town. Lake Geneva has a lot of bargains right now with the economy down.

I strongly disagree with you on Lake Geneva being exciting. Maybe during the summer months, but in most months, it is a pretty dull place. The movie theatre has closed down in town. Also, a lot of the restaurants are more expensive as they are in a resort area. During the summer months, traffic is a real PITA.

DO realize also that you are committing to a commute of ~300 miles a week in Lake Geneva which can add up over the year with teh current gas prices.

Personally, I would live in Whitewater and minimize you commute on a daily basis and commute to your fun. Do realize that it is a 35 minute drive to Harvard, IL and the train to Chicago and an hour drive to Milwaukee on I-43.

Yes, I agree. Whitewater would be better than either Madison or Lake Geneva when you factor in the commute.
