Hi, Just starting to look for a lake cabin to purchase somewhere in WI. Nice quiet, safe, reasonable prices, year round cabins. Don't even know where to start. Door Country? Nothing fancy, just cozy, 2bdrms, inside bathroom, furnace.
Can anyone give me suggestions please? Somewhere to start? Thank you so much!!! Coming from just west of Rockford. Kenosha?

My uncle used to own a cabin right on the water in WI... he also lived in Kenosha I wish I could remember the area.. I went there once, I know we drove through Green Bay to get there and there were Amish near there too.. if that tells you anything ( sorry I'm from CA) I'll try to get a hold of him and see if I can get the name. He lives in FL full time now.

My suggestion would be look at uses of lake for what you want to do first. Fish a lot look for lake with fish would like, if want a lake with no motor's allowed so quieter can find them also. If want one to fish pontoon and such be many lakes like that out there. Wisconsin DNR website for lakes be a start and if have area more want look at lakes in that area. North part of state has many lakes and prolly a bit cheaper than southern part of state but still water front property is higher.

Good luck on your search!

You can find a place anywhere. If you want quieter I would go up north (anywhere north of HWY 29). Some areas are busier, like Minocqua... but most are great get away areas. The extra drive is worth it!

I also agree with Dreamhunter65 that you should shop based on the type of lake you are looking for. There are lakes of all sizes and ones that are good for all types of activities. Do you want to be on a chain?

Where would you be driving in from? Or do you intend to make this a full-time residence? If you'd be driving from no further south than, say, Wisconsin Dells or if you intend to live in the cabin full-time, I would suggest looking across the border in the western U.P. Lakefront property up there is quite a bit cheaper because it's just a little too far from the region's major metros to be practical for weekending.

My uncle lives in Rockford and makes the drive to the family farm (Rice Lake area) often without much hassle. Just to give you an idea of other people's drive time.

Like others have said, northern Wisconsin will be cheaper than Door County. Lakes in the tiny towns in nondescript areas will be cheaper than the Minocqua area. And the U.P. will be the cheapest of all.

Give us some idea of what you want (everything? fishing? high-speed motoring? puttering around? canoeing? wildlife watching? shopping? good restuarants?) and a broad price range and you will get a lot better suggestions.

Thank you for your message. Looking for puttering around, wildlife watching, quiet, not a lot of bustling and action. Price range..well ... def under 100,000. Will be a temp second home with intentions of making it our perm residence. Tiny towns are perfect for us, just a little uncertain exactly where to look. Sounds like very northern WI. Thank you so much again!
