What's the Scope of Your Jobhunt & How Has It Gone?

I had been laid off Aug 15, 2008 and the 1st 6 months I mainly was looking for a job in Houston. I only had 3 to 4 interviews and they didn't hire me even though I aced the interview. Seeing that the Houston economy was flat, I moved back to Chicago Feb 11, 2009 and have mostly been looking for any CAD, Technical Writer, or Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical Designer jobs LOCALLY. All this time I rarely did a nationwide job search, but looking back maybe that's what I should have done. I never even had an interview in Chicago!

Well, I'm gonna take a 9 week vacation in the Philippines Nov 21 to Jan 28th, 2011. When I come back to America I will hit a nationwide job hunt.

My 2 year local jobhunt has been a failure. I occasionally looked and applied for some nationwide jobs but no luck.

My thoughts exactly. So while there are people suffering you're taking your dream vacation, and have the audacity to brag about it in front of the people paying your bills.

Classy.

Why do you say I'm bragging? I saved my UI too, which was $406 weekly. The R/T plane ticket was only $1096. My mom has a house in the Philippines where I'll stay rent free. So my only expenses are food, what I buy, and transportation.

When I worked $68,000 / year I paid a lot of taxes too.

It must be nice to be able to go on vacation on the taxpayer's dime. UI is for those who need money to hold them over until they find another job, not to fund vacations....

I think he day trades for income, too. OP, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not wrong to take a vacation on saved UI when you don't receive any more. I paid into the tax system with my last $68,000 a year job, and I can do anything with my money. I'd rather be working and I have applied to lots of jobs in my 2 year unemployment, so I didn't cheat the system. I don't pay rent or have a mortgage so I saved a lot and I can spend the money as I want to. You people aren't justified to say I can't take a vacation.

Yeah, I try to day trade for income too.

My job hunt has been international. In fact, in an ideal world, I would be working abroad. Hopefully after my masters. I did talk to quite a few recruiters for jobs teaching English in Korea, Chile, China, and Thailand but I do not think that will really push my career ahead (besides Chile which I was told the pay basically would be on subsistence level and I would not be able to save for when I return to the US).

I moved to Atlanta after college graduation in order to live rent-free while job hunting. Bad idea. I got a few phone interviews here and an in-person interview in Charleston, SC, but no offers. The economy here is awful for recent grads and particularly bad if your degree is not from UGA, Ga Tech, Emory, or one of the other universities in the region. While my school is one of the top in the country, it is a small private LAC which is known mainly in New England/NY/DC, academic circles, and the Jewish community. Within a week of focusing my job hunt back in Boston (where I went to college), I had 6 phone interviews and then 4 in-person interviews. I "only" had to apply to about 150 jobs in Boston to get those interviews, which is a much better ratio than my general job hunt- particularly because they were all for professional jobs with benefits.

I got an offer from the old department I worked in at my university last week. It was an unofficial offer but now the paperwork is buried in some kind of HR hell so my contacts are trying to get it to light so they can make me the official offer today. It's stressful because they want me to start in less than 3 weeks and I don't even have an idea of a salary. Until I get the official offer, I can't begin to make preparations for the move (plane tickets, hotel, rental car) and I'm having a REALLY hard time finding long distance roommates within walking distance of the university. I won't be able to afford a car and would rather not have to commute for 3 hours a day via public transportation for a job that will probably pay under $30,000 (which might be a decent starting salary in some parts of the country, but it really abysmal for Boston). The work week is 35 hours which is great if you're salaried, but I won't be salaried until I get a promotion.

It's a good foot in the door position for a field that might not make me a millionaire, but will allow me to support myself and give me transferable skills to work in the field I actually would like to work in after the economy clears up. Higher education and nonprofit development seem to be the only areas in those fields that are hiring through the economy as it is. While I have always envisioned myself working as a program officer for a nonprofit, perhaps this opportunity will be for the best by pushing me into fundraising.

Working for a university is great (I've been at mine 10 years in Sept.) - the pay sucks at first, but eventually you make a decent 6 figures, and the hours are fantastic.

I was fired on June 28th, 2010.........I stared interviewing around the 2nd week of July. I interview at least once or twice a week. I've had 1 offer but turned it down.

All in all I am doing lots of interviewing but I have not snagged anything yet. I think I am competing with a lot of people. I always get good interview feedback but there are always better/more qualified people.
