For those who drive their own vehicle for work, I would like to know what you are getting paid per mile by your employer. I'm talking about people that are employees not independent contractors like Uber or Lyft and I'm also not referring to truck drivers.

I get paid a set amount of $500 a month and a variable mileage rate around 20-25 cents per mile depending on what the price of gas is at the time. I average about 3,500-4k miles per month so I'm getting somewhere around .35 cents per mile.

I think the deal I'm getting is pretty crappy considering the Federal rate is .58 cents per mile.

What are you getting paid per mile and how many miles per month do you drive? Are you happy with with what you get?

Our company mirrors the federal rate as seems the others replying seem to reflect. I doubt many of us drive near the miles you do.

It appears driving is a big part of your job so not surprising your compensation for driving is calculated differently than most of us.

My guess is they figure $500 allowance pays for cost of vehicle, general maintenance, and insurance so you're not compensated for vehicle use and depreciation, just the actual cost of fuel.

Figuring at the lower range, at 20 cents a mile and if you get 20 MPG that's $4 which should cover the cost of 1 gal. of fuel.

I get .58 per mile, but I often have to drive down dirt roads, sometimes muddy or rocky, and sometimes I have to use my 4wd truck to access forestry roads. I think its a crap deal, the .58 is intended for city/highway not rural 4wd bushwacking.

The .58 Fed rate assumes that you are not getting any other "car allowance".

As the IRS says, "The standard mileage rate for business use is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile"

$500/month covering fixed costs AND .35/mile for gas is a very good deal.

I get the standard federal $0.58, but the use of my personal vehicle is minimal. Occasional meetings and conferences, probably averaging 100 miles/month or so.

It sure is a good deal for the company paying it. At 4000 miles per month the driver is losing $420/month compared to the standard mileage rate.

Can you still get a tax break for the difference in the stipend and what the government allows?
