I transferred to another department around mid august. I've been in IT support for about 14 years and thought about branching out into another area. It's sort of IT..QC but after being trained I just don't feel it's a fit for me. I think eventually I could learn it but doing clinical testing is not what I want. So I find out that my old department will add 2 more positions. My old boss would be happy to have me back but the spots are not offical yet. Meaning no post internally ( and probably external ). Now I have to wait it out and pray they are posted soon. The people here are nice but I don't like the work. My question is if you transfer back, is it just a matter of paper work or would you need to interview for that spot? Just curious since I had been there for 4 years but not sure how this all works. It's my first time doing this at any company. Just curious to hear from others who may have experienced the same. Thanks!!

If the criteria for the job they post to the public are at all different (more demanding) than when you held the job, I would think in the spirit of fairness you would need to interview. Especially if the job itself changed.

Either way, I think you would have the edge, as a known entity, and with the inside experience. Although they would need to run a competition to staff the position you are currently in, unless they fill that with a transfer.

Good job to realize early on you're not made for this position or vice versa.

Depends on company policy.
