If so, what are the pros and cons of that type of work? I see it's decent pay but I'm sure long hours are involved. How complicated can it be? And advice or information is appreciated! Thanks.

Lots of people out there who do this work.

It can be physically difficult. Ladder and even poleclimbing are necessary skills. You have to be in decent shape. You may have to go in attics or crawlspaces. You can't be colorblind. You have to work outside in inclement weather. You have to be able to deal with the public.

Next comes the technology. You need to understand how the internet/DSL/cable modems work. You need the ability to troubleshoot data networks or build a LAN, wireless or wired. You need to understand ethernet. You need to be able to burn new firmware of change out a card.

That's a start. Just the beginning.
