I've been looking around to see what's out there. I have a job. It's ok. I enjoy the work. I don't like my dept head and raises at my co are poor. I know the economy is bad, but my co is known for bad raises. OTOH, starting salary is typically at the high end and we have pretty good benefits (retirement and 401k matching).
I was speaking with a former colleague earlier in the week and he let me know that his co is hiring for a few positions. These jobs haven't been publicized yet. I sent him my CV and he sent it off to his mgr and HR. They called me to schedule an interview. It would be a jump in title for me (associate scientist to scientist). I'm guessing it would be a salary jump as well.
Here's the thing. I currently get 4 weeks vacation, 1 week personal, and holidays. At this co it would be 3 weeks vacation. Although, maybe company holidays would make up for the lost week. The commute is doubled. That's a big problem, but I figure a lot of folk have a price and what's mine? What's yours? How much of a salary jump would you require to double your commute time (30 minutes to 1 hour)?
To justify that... I would want to work from home one day per week and an increase of about 10%. Honestly, I would just move closer to wherever the business is for that large a commute, but I live in medium sized city where 1 hour can get you from one end of the suburbs and back.
Yea, a flex schedule is something to consider. As far as pay goes, I wouldn't do it for 10%. It's not worth that little figuring gas, wear and tear (sp?) on the car, and my time. Say it's 8k more per year. That's $666/mo. Remove a portion for taxes, a portion for gas, and a portion for car/time. Forget it. Now, if I were in the big monies it would be a different story. But, I'm not.
I'm a home owner too and I wouldn't consider moving either. At the very least the interview will be good practice for me and perhaps give me an idea of what I'm worth. I have to present for it and I hate presenting, so it will be good on that end.
It would have to be 25-30k unless it was a job that I know that I would get a lot more enjoyment out of doing, in which case I would not require any kind of pay raise.
side note - I hate traffic and commuting. I work from home.
I hate city driving too, so usually take back roads in the country when driving across Buffalo. Takes me 30 minutes more, but far better than dealing with traffic.
If there is more room for growth, that is the main thing I would focus on. I'd say it would need a 15% pay increase as well.
I took a pay cut to get out of a job I HATED. It was about a 8% drop. However, I get a company car and only pay about 150 a month for it. It has the company name all over it but I don't have to pay for gas ever and I drive about 1,000 personal miles a month. Plus, I like my new job quite a bit.
I'd do it for a quarter more an hour. 25 cents. Ten bucks a week.
No problem.
